Life Beyond Trauma

Incest

Surviving the trauma of incest takes courage, support, and tenacity. None of us who have been through this kind of sexual abuse is able to do it on our own. We were alone, and on our own when it occurred. We do not have to remain isolated and alone in our recovery. As survivors we can band together and find strength and comfort in other who understand what we have been through.

The evidence is that in order to fully recover and move on with our lives, we have to find others who have been through similar sexual abuse and incest experiences in order to find the kind of community and support necessary to heal.

Our self esteem and our emotions take a big hit when we are survivors of incest sexual abuse at the hands of those who said they loved us. We are often left with emotional scars that haunt us in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety Disorders, Dissociative Disorders, Chemical Dependancy, Depression, failed relationships and eating disorders. The good news is, recovery is possible, though our self esteem is the hardest to improve because we carry so much shame over what occurred.

The exciting thing is that together we can find our way out of the horror of our past and discover the precious, amazing gift of who we were meant to be. Our self esteem doesn’t have to be permanently destroyed by our sexual abuse and incest history. There are tools, there is hope, and we can work together to reclaim our “self&rdqup;, even when it feels as if there is no “self” left to reclaim.

As a survivor of incest, child abuse, and adult date rape, I can tell you that I understand the pain of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Disorder. The impact of what we have endured with the abuse, the trauma, the self esteem loss, the incest itself, takes a toll on our lives and relationships.

Fortunately there are brilliant minds that have come up with tools, techniques, and therapies that can truly transform our past and give us our lives back. I know, I’ve been one of the fortunate people that has been able to reclaim my lost self esteem and build a life with love and joy. YOU can, too.
