Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D. — once known as Multiple Personality Disorder) is frequently the result of repeated, and horrific sexual and physical abuse. This concept may be somewhat controversial. However, I have seen enough of it in my own experience to know that the detractors are often afraid of their role in the abuse being exposed.
Surviving the trauma of incest, sexual abuse, rape, and even ritual abuse, takes courage, support, and tenacity. None of us who have been through this kind of sexual horror can do it on our own. We were alone, and on our own when it occurred. We do not have to remain isolated and alone in our recovery. As survivors we can band together and find strength and comfort in others who understand what we have been through.
The evidence is that in order to fully recover and move on with our lives, we have to find others who have been through similar abuse and suffer from Dissociative Identify Disorder in order to find the kind of community and support necessary to heal.
Our self esteem and our emotions take a big hit when we endure of this kind of sexual abuse, often at the hands of those who said they loved us. Recovery is possible, though our self esteem is the hardest to improve because we carry so much shame over what occurred.
The exciting thing is that together we can find our way out of the horror of our past and discover the precious, amazing gift of who we were meant to be. Our self esteem doesn’t have to be permanently destroyed by our sexual abuse history. There are tools, there is hope, and we can work together to reclaim our “self”, even when it feels as if there is no “self” left to reclaim.
As a survivor of incest, child abuse, and adult date rape, I can tell you that I understand the pain of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Disorder. The impact of what we have endured with the abuse, the trauma, the self esteem loss, the incest itself, takes a toll on our lives and relationships.
Fortunately, some brilliant minds have created tools, techniques, and therapies that can truly transform our past and give us our lives back. I know, I’ve been one of the fortunate people that has reclaimed my lost self esteem and built a life with love and joy. YOU can, too.
