Military Sexual Trauma
Being a survivor of Military Sexual Trauma (MST) takes courage, support, and tenacity. No one who has been through this kind of experience is able to do it on their own. You may have been alone and on our own when it occurred, but you do not have to remain isolated and alone in your recovery.
The evidence is that in order to fully recover and move on with our lives, we have to find others who have been through similar experiences of sexual abuse in order to find the kind of community and support necessary to heal. Whether you experienced rape, harassment, manipulation or coercion, you have survived more than just the trauma of serving during wartime. You have survived an assault on your soul.
Your self esteem and your emotions take a big hit when you have suffered Military Sexual Trauma and your nightmare doesn’t end when you leave the service. Recovery is possible, though your self esteem is the hardest to improve because you carry so much shame over what occurred. But the shame DOES NOT belong to you. You were taken advantage of in the course of doing your job.
The exciting thing is that together we can find our way out of the horror of our past and discover the precious, amazing gift of who we were meant to be. Our self esteem and our lives do not have to be permanently destroyed by the Military Sexual Trauma (MST). There are tools, there is hope, and we can work together to reclaim our “self”, even when it feels as if there is no “self” left to reclaim.
As a survivor of incest, child abuse, and adult date rape, I can tell you that I understand the pain of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Disorder. The impact of what we have endured with the self esteem loss, the sexual abuse itself, takes a toll on our lives and relationships.
Fortunately there are brilliant minds that have come up with tools, techniques, and therapies that can truly transform our past and give us our lives back. I know, I’ve been one of the fortunate people that has been able to reclaim my lost self esteem and build a life with love and joy. YOU can, too.
